Color along with a walk

Take a short walk and collect three or four leaves in different colors. Bring them home and use them as your color guide. It makes the finished page look more natural than guessing.

Layering autumn colors

Start with the lightest color, yellow, then add orange over parts of it, then red over a smaller area. Colored pencils blend well this way and make leaves look like they're changing color.

Ideas for an autumn afternoon

  • Color a woodland animal, then give it a name and a home in the forest.
  • Press real leaves between the pages of a heavy book and compare them to your colors.
  • Pick a page for a classroom nature table display.
